NEON's mission is to build wealth for low-to-moderate-income entrepreneurs in North Minneapolis and surrounding communities. Our vision is to transform North Minneapolis and the surrounding area into a prosperous, visible, sustainable, and highly diverse multi-cultural community of entrepreneurs. We work with individuals at various stages of entrepreneurship - from "information seekers" to existing business entities, providing a roadmap to start, grow and thrive as scalable businesses. We offer spaces to work, expert guidance from NEON Business Advisors, mentorship, business incubation, development, training, and workshops.
Reporting to the President, the Director of Development position is a front-line fundraiser, leading all NEON’s fundraising activities. This position is responsible for fostering an environment of inclusivity and commitment to the organization’s financial success through the cultivation of donors and supporters at every level, leading both individual major gift fundraising and annual giving programs. In collaboration with the President, the Board of Directors, and teams across organizational departments, the Director of Development manages the organization’s overall income budget and strategic planning of future budgets. The Director of Development is expected to be devoted to the best-in-class fundraising, development operations and build a culture of philanthropy through collective responsibilities with staff and volunteer leadership. Also, this position is responsible for Public Relations, engaging key community leaders with important business topics, initiatives, and objectives, and will require attendance at occasional evening and weekend events.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Leadership and Management* 70%
- Create and execute the organization’s external affairs, public relations, and community engagement strategy in alignment with NEON’s mission, vision, values, and strategic goals for growth.
- Identify and implement opportunities to enhance the effectiveness and increase engagement of the NEON organization.
- Develop new and existing donors, form partnerships, work with the Board of Trustees and serve as a key member of the staff Leadership Team.
- Provide leadership to establish fundraising campaigns and works with Board members and staff to develop and execute annual and multi-year fundraising goals and plans for the organization.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts and teams across organizational departments to understand organizational efforts that align with external affairs strategy and produce compelling and impactful content to communicate these efforts.
- Works closely with Finance and Marketing/Communications in developing fundraising, messaging and marketing strategies, and funding proposals and related materials.
- Develop speakers bureau, compelling media-focused content, ranging from press releases and written pitches to the media, and oversee organizational sponsorships and presence at local events to establish brand and product awareness.
- Establish, implement, and track measures and indicators of fundraising progress and success.
- Reinforce compliance and consistency with relevant organizational policies and procedures.
- Build and maintain ongoing relationships and engagements with external stakeholders, community influencers, businesses, civic organizations, and media outlets to execute external communications strategy via multiple communication platforms and media (print, digital and social), including earned media.
- Oversee all activities of Fund Raising and the External Affairs.
- Provide timely fundraising reports, analysis, and recommendations to the Board, President, and senior staff.
Supervisory Responsibilities* 25%
- Manage the hiring process for positions within this team; develop and update job descriptions; develop performance expectations.
- Manage employee and team performance; ensure employee training; communicating job expectations, and support employee professional development.
- Manage and ensure effective employee relations; create an ethical, inclusive, non-discriminatory, and safe work environment; establish effective communication lines/methods.
- Ensure all HR activities including, time off requests, time cards approval, investigate complaint and performance concerns; implement disciplinary action as needed, and consult with HR partner.
POSITION REQUIREMENS
Education and Experience·
- Bachelor’s degree and 7+ years related experience, including experience working at a senior level.
- 7+ years of experience working in public relations, external affairs, community engagement, or similar fields with proven ability to establish brand awareness through partnerships with key stakeholders.
- 3+ years of experience managing and/or overseeing the work of communications or public relations professionals.
- Demonstrated ability to build and manage relationships to influence and ensure organizational brand and messaging are prioritized and communicated.
- Experience and knowledge of developing, gathering, and monitoring KPIs and data to ensure external affairs, public relations, and community engagement efforts are aligned with organizational strategy and growth.
- Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents, including major donors, foundations, and other organizations.
- Ability to foster an environment of collaboration, creativity, and professional growth while delivering on fundraising goals.
- Exposure to various cultures, geographies, nationalities, ethnicities, and points of view, appreciating the basis of each person’s worldview.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated experience with nonprofit organizations preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively with influential people.
- Skilled at working with staff with various strengths and personalities.
- Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Excellent computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, databases – Salesforce, Raisers Edge, E-tapestry.
